Lupines are beautiful, and this native lupine is one of the best. It is a big plant, up to 4 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide, with large spires of purple/deep blue flowers. It is a pollinator magnet for bumblebees, honeybees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. It’s also a caterpillar host plant for numerous butterfly and moth species. To top it off, it’s a nitrogen-fixing plant. It does require moisture so would not do well in an area that doesn’t get supplemental summer water.
These have been robust growers for me! They were bushy and many flowered this summer, but they are dormant now. They do show some live growth. Most or all of the 1-gallon pots can be divided now. I will definitely keep growing these. Caution: Parts of the plant and its seeds can be toxic if ingested.
