Very pretty medium shrub to 10 feet with sprays of tiny cream to white flowers. Oceanspray blooms late May to August. These flowers attract hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies. It is a larval host for some native butterflies. Birds and small mammals eagerly eat the dried seeds that persist into winter. The shrub does best in shade or part shade, in moist or dry soil (with some additional summer water). It is a good understory plant .
Besides roasting the seeds for food, indigenous people used many parts of the plant for medicinal purposes. The wood, known as “ironwood,” is used for many tools and utensils.
These 1-gallon plants are well branched and healthy.
