Spiraea douglasii (Douglas spirea)

This is one small native shrub you should plant. Commonly known as hardhack, this shrub grows 3-6 feet tall and wide. This is an abundant wetland plant but can also adapt to dry conditions and is somewhat drought tolerant. Be sure to provide supplemental water until they are well established. The soft upright plumes of purple-pink flowers are very pretty and bloom summer into fall (my field-planted Douglas spireas are still blooming in September!), then turn into seed clusters that feed migratory birds as well as small mammals. The flowers attract butterflies, bees, and other pollinators.

My plants have done better in the field than in the pots, so once yours are settled into their permanent homes they will thrive and bloom. Some plants are in various sizes of treepots and some are in 1-gallon pots; all are about the same size.
